From the artist: "This large painting began as a plant portrait of a romping, somewhat gangly shrub I've grown in my greenhouse for several years. The fragrance of the creamy white flowers is heavenly. I added a playful, grey poodle, the kind of fellow who relentlessly nudges his ball in your direction to animate the composition. I have enjoyed introducing dogs in my recent paintings. Posing (perhaps reluctantly), playing and often lounging, for me they bring a room or a garden to life. Although I consider myself a colorist who enjoys painting flowers, interiors, textiles, patterns, paintings within paintings—each affording endless possibilities—dogs have given my new paintings depth."
